  • What are Peptides?

Posted on July 10, 2012 by admin

Peptides are the building blocks of proteins. Built from amino acids, peptides provide many of the structures on the body--including hair, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They form the hemoglobin in the blood, carrying oxygen throughout the body to muscles and organs. Peptides are also the main building blocks for enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions for cell functions, and they provide the signals on the outer surface of cells so your body can communicate systemically. Peptides have many uses, and most of them are necessary for life.

While there are a variety of different peptide complexes, a couple of ways they work for your skin are:

Produce Collagen - Collagen, made up of long strands of amino acids, is really the main building block of skin, giving the skin its smooth, and youthful appearance.

Strengthen Capillaries & Increase Microcirculation — Peptides
themselves are constructed from various combinations of the 22 unique amino
acids (AAs) found in the body.  Depending on the number of amino acids involved, these peptide structures go by different names: oligopeptides (2-20 AAs), peptides (fewer than 50 AAs), and proteins (50 or more AAs). When it comes to caring for delicate skin, peptides help by protecting the integrity of elastin & collagen bundles (two essential elements of the skin), and minimizing the impact of free radical damage, these powerful peptides work to improve skin firmness and elasticity.

Results include: improved skin compactness, reduced wrinkles, increased skin tonicity and increased skin firmness.

  • Oh, Ouch! Sun Damage to Skin

Posted on June 13, 2012 by Reb

Summer is almost officially here and it’s time to shed the clothes and hit the beach, pool, backyard and the great outdoors.  Our love with being outside can be ooooohhhhh soooo good and oh, ouch...bad!

Both the Mayo Clinic and WebMD state that the cumulative effects of sun exposure put us at higher risk of cellular damage, early wrinkling, age spots, actinic keratoses, and skin cancer -- including melanoma, the most serious type.

Now you’ve all heard it before, to avoid sun damage to your skin wear sunscreen at least 30spf or higher, wear a hat, stay out of the sun, etc.  Well, that just isn’t fun!   No it’s not, but if you are over 30, it’s starting to show.  So let’s be sensible girls and just do it.

As I mentioned in the last blog, the good thing is you can find lots of fun ways to avoid sun damage to your skin.  One way is the Umbrella Environmental Protection line that Doctor Schwab provides.

So get ready for the great outdoors and check out this month’s deal here.

  • Personalized Father’s Day Basket of Gifts

Posted on May 30, 2012 by Reb

The fun thing about Fathers is they tend to be the humor bone in the family.  That is why Father’s Day can be a little more fun than other holidays.  So have fun and give him a personalized Father’s Day gift.

Now personalized doesn’t mean the gift has to have his name on it, but it should reflect his personality.  What does dad like to do?  Does he like fishing, hunting, golf, BBQ, etc.

A unique personalized gift Father’s Day gift can be a combination of all the things he likes.

I suggest getting a basket, get the kids, and get collecting.  Here are some ideas on what to put in your basket.

Photos – A photo collage is a great project for the kids. Whether they are young or old, they can help pick out some great photos from the past year.  Use a large piece of post-it paper or a small photo album.  If you are the digital type, use one of the online services like ShutterFly.com or Costco.com to get your printable photo album.

Skincare products – Just because he’s dad, doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to look good.  Believe it or not, skincare is one of the hottest markets for men today.  Not only do they want to look good, but they are also concerned about being healthy and skin damage.  Make it easy for him with Doctor Schwab’s AM/PM moisturizer for men.

Technology – Now technology can get pricy if you are looking at an iPad or smart phone.  There are some great relatively inexpensive gifts.  If you’re not as tech-savvy check out an online source like cnet.com to get ideas and read reviews.

Cooking – If dad is a chef, there are so many amazing things out there to explore.  Gourmet to good old BBQ.  But I find the best way to give dad a personalize Father’s Day gift is to give dad a day off and cook for him or take him to a good steak restaurant.  Why do all dad’s like steak?—let me know if you know the answer.

Other great ideas for the basket include: basket with a bottle of his favorite wine or whiskey, golf balls, socks, Hug Me and Kiss Me coupons, individuals of his favorite candies, fishing tackle (not the live kind—haha), etc.

With the personalized basket Father’s Day gift, you can be really creative and sure to get him a gift he will love. Click here to get started!

    Happy Father’s Day!

  • Father's Day Specials He Will Really Want

Posted on May 23, 2012 by Reb

If you are like me, you find shopping for dad can be a little harder than shopping for mom. promoting Father’s Day Specials don’t seem to be as big of a focus for the industry as it is for Mother’s Day.  Poor dad, always loved but not always at the top of the retail target market list. Not to fear dad, we can still find some really cool gifts for you.

So what are some great Father’s Day Specials this year to make dad feel special.  First start with what does he like to do--golf, read, hunt, fish, ride his Harley, look good, etc.

Golf: Maybe dad doesn’t need another golf ball or maybe he does.  You could always get him a round of golf at the local country club.  A lot of golf courses are having Father’s Day Special now.  He and his buddies will thank you.

Dinner: Instead of brunch, like you planned for mom, make reservations for dinner at his favorite steak house.  For reviews and online reservations try using www.OpenTable.com or another similar service.  It will help you with everything you need to make the reservation to scheduling a limo.

Books: Amazon Kindle Fire is on fire and should be considered for the dad that loves to read. One note, don’t forget to upload a few books to it or get him a gift card to purchase a couple of books before you give it to him.

HOT* Beauty Products: Yes, I said it; beauty products for men are the hottest thing right now.  Men are just as conscious of their looks and skincare as women.  The trick is they don’t want you to know it.  So you getting dad a quality skincare package really helps him out. He doesn’t have to sneak or feel embarrassed to buy it for himself and he really wants it.

For young dad, Doctor D. Schwab has SRG Super Removal Gel to Loosen and lift blackheads and impurities from pores while it helps to normalize oil production and allow healthy oxygen to reach the skin.

For mature dads, get him Doctor D. Schwab Bamboo Cream Peel to help exfoliate and look younger.

For all dads check out these great Father’s Day Skincare Specials here.

  • You are in Control: Minimize those Wrinkles!

Posted on April 27, 2012 by Reb

I was looking in the mirror the other day to check my freshly applied makeup and noticed a fine line/wrinkle under my right eye. The eye shadow was emphasizing the line and I immediately wiped my makeup off from under my eye to try to minimize the wrinkle.  For appearance sake it mostly work to reduce the visible line, but I couldn't stop thinking about it all day.  This started my quest to find a way to minimize wrinkles.

According to the Mayo Clinic, wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors—some you can control, others you can’t.  These factors include: Age, Exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Light, Smoking, Repeated Facial Expressions, Gender and Poor Nutrition.

We can’t control age or gender, so let’s talk about the things we can control to minimize wrinkles.

Avoid the sun. Especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wear sunscreen year-round. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation damages the outer layer of your skin, while UVA radiation damages the deeper layer resulting in sagging and wrinkling. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends using a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen on your face year-round to defend against UVA and UVB radiation. You can try Doctor D. Schwab Environmental Moisturizer collection to defend against skin damage from the environment.

Stop smoking. Cigarette smoke may cause the body to form free radicals, which are known to cause the cells to break down, and nicotine reduces blood flow to the skin. Smoking also uses up vitamin C in the body, which plays a role in preserving the collagen in the skin. Smoking also forms deep repetitive expression lines around the mouth and eyes, ultimately leading to “smoker’s face.”

Relax and stop squinting. Every time you smile, frown or squint a groove forms under the skin's surface. As your skin matures it's less able to bounce back from these repeated facial expressions and wrinkles develop. While it's impossible to completely avoid making facial expressions you can minimize squinting by wearing sunglasses and reading glasses if you need them.  Also Wash your face gently, pat it dry and apply moisturizer with light strokes like Doctor D. Schwab AM/PM Moisturizer.

Eat a diet rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins. The essential fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon, nuts and seeds help with skin repair. Antioxidants, found in foods like blackberries, green tea, olive oil and broccoli, are known to help neutralize the skin-damaging effects of free radicals. Nuts are a great source of skin-friendly vitamin E, while carrots are a rich source of beta-carotene and vitamin A.

Following these four steps in conjunction with a good skincare regimen should minimize wrinkles and clear your mind to think about other things.
