  • Beauty Tips for Men

Posted on April 28, 2012 by Reb

Hey all you men out there, Serious skincare isn’t just for women.  Take some beauty tips for men from our founder, CEO and senior chemist for Doctor Schwab, Dr. Dieter Kuster.

"Men see what proper skin care does for women. They don’t want to age any more than women do. They want to look as good as they can, as long as they can. In the past, this was a mostly feminine ideal. As it turns out, though, real men really do take care of their skin.  Most men are still using the same products and doing the same regimen they learned as teen-agers. They feel safer sticking to what they have always done. Using the woman of the house’s products once in a while isn’t the best solution, either—men do better with products that fit their activity level and need for a more masculine scent. A birthday, anniversary or other special occasion is often the perfect excuse to give a man his own skin care routine,” says Dr. Kuster.

Simple and easy beauty tips for men:

Eat Well: You focus on your workout, but are you watching what you eat?  Diet is the fuel you need to keep going and bring the beauty from within.  You are what you eat.  Start  with at least one green vegetable a day then move to lean cuts of meat.  Take your lunch instead of going out to lunch.  Drink water—very important.

Protect and Take Care of Your Skin Moisturizing is a necessity. Always employ a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing and shaving and don't forget your neck. For an intensive humidity treatment use pure vitamin E, or aloe vera oil. It is obtainable in liquid form, or just breaks open a capsule and apply the oil directly to the skin. This is a great under eye treatment. Men need to eat right, too. You want to eat a healthy diet to maintain healthy skin. You also want to get some exercise in, every day. It clears your pores.

After Shaving: It is important that you don't abuse your skin when trying to get a close shave. After having, apply an oil-free moisturizer to soothe and defend the face. A good daily skin care routine includes cleansing, followed by a gentle facial exfoliant scrub, which also enhances shaving ease and comfort. Wind and sun can really cause damage to your skin. Sunscreen should be used prior to leaving the house. A good scrub is necessary for healthy clean skin.

Don't Forget Your Hands and Feet: Don’t forget to include your hands and feet in your grooming routine. Well-manicured nails and toes contribute to good hygiene and grooming habits. Make time to clip and file your nails at home.

  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles...No More!

Posted on April 28, 2012 by Reb

At the beginning of the year I made a commitment to invest in a quality skincare line for daily use and get a professional facial at least once a month.  It’s amazing the  transformation in just 3 months.  My face is brighter, smoother and younger looking.  The fine lines and wrinkles that I couldn’t stop thinking about are no longer bothering me.
When it comes to the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, there are a number of products and procedures. Here are some of the more popular options available today:
Anti-Aging Skincare: This should be your first and easiest methods of getting rid of fine lines and aging. A
large variety of skincare lines are available in the market. Anti-Aging lines are specially formulated to provide the required nourishment essential for the aging skin. Thus the fine lines and wrinkles decrease. The disadvantage of anti-aging skin care products is that once you stop using these creams, the fine lines and wrinkles are likely to come back again.
Microdermabraision: It works by removing the skin's dead cells and increasing the cell turnover rate of our skin. The look of fine lines and wrinkles can be improved with a procedure by improving skin texture and smoothing the rough superficial skin layer.
Chemical Peel: In this process, a chemical solution is applied on the skin in order to peel off the upper layers of the skin. Later, a new skin will grow and take the place of old skin. The new skin is going to be much smoother and tighter than the previous skin. At the end of the process, you will get an even skin surface. This process not only removes the fine lines and wrinkles but also help to get even-toned skin. For some people one session with a professional is enough to obtain the desired results and others may require more than one session.
Botox Injections: This is a very effective treatment for crow's feet, fine lines on forehead and lip area. A tiny dose of the botox injection is administered directly into the affected part to weaken the underlying muscles. As a result, the muscles will not contract and wrinkles will not occur. However, this is a very expensive treatment and has to be repeated after regular interval of time.  Be sure to go to an accredited professional to have this procedure done.
If you read the blog on minimizing wrinkles last week, we discussed the factors that cause
wrinkles—some you can control, some you can’t.  Hopefully you’ve been practicing the four suggested steps.  I know I have.  I still have that one fine line under my eye, but it doesn’t seem as prominent as when I found it a few weeks ago.  Yaahhhh!!!
I haven’t tried a Chemical Peel yet, but I’ll let you know when I do.  Botox isn’t for me at this time, but I’m not totally ruling it out.
For fine lines and wrinkles, start off with a good skin care regimen, try a quality skincare line like Doctor D. Schwab, and than move to the more invasive procedures--only if you have to.

  • You are in Control: Minimize those Wrinkles!

Posted on April 27, 2012 by Reb

I was looking in the mirror the other day to check my freshly applied makeup and noticed a fine line/wrinkle under my right eye. The eye shadow was emphasizing the line and I immediately wiped my makeup off from under my eye to try to minimize the wrinkle.  For appearance sake it mostly work to reduce the visible line, but I couldn't stop thinking about it all day.  This started my quest to find a way to minimize wrinkles.

According to the Mayo Clinic, wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors—some you can control, others you can’t.  These factors include: Age, Exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Light, Smoking, Repeated Facial Expressions, Gender and Poor Nutrition.

We can’t control age or gender, so let’s talk about the things we can control to minimize wrinkles.

Avoid the sun. Especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wear sunscreen year-round. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation damages the outer layer of your skin, while UVA radiation damages the deeper layer resulting in sagging and wrinkling. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends using a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen on your face year-round to defend against UVA and UVB radiation. You can try Doctor D. Schwab Environmental Moisturizer collection to defend against skin damage from the environment.

Stop smoking. Cigarette smoke may cause the body to form free radicals, which are known to cause the cells to break down, and nicotine reduces blood flow to the skin. Smoking also uses up vitamin C in the body, which plays a role in preserving the collagen in the skin. Smoking also forms deep repetitive expression lines around the mouth and eyes, ultimately leading to “smoker’s face.”

Relax and stop squinting. Every time you smile, frown or squint a groove forms under the skin's surface. As your skin matures it's less able to bounce back from these repeated facial expressions and wrinkles develop. While it's impossible to completely avoid making facial expressions you can minimize squinting by wearing sunglasses and reading glasses if you need them.  Also Wash your face gently, pat it dry and apply moisturizer with light strokes like Doctor D. Schwab AM/PM Moisturizer.

Eat a diet rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins. The essential fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon, nuts and seeds help with skin repair. Antioxidants, found in foods like blackberries, green tea, olive oil and broccoli, are known to help neutralize the skin-damaging effects of free radicals. Nuts are a great source of skin-friendly vitamin E, while carrots are a rich source of beta-carotene and vitamin A.

Following these four steps in conjunction with a good skincare regimen should minimize wrinkles and clear your mind to think about other things.
